EU customs in 2026: what importers must not overlook

Customs delays are almost always self-inflicted. A wrong HS code, a missing certificate or an unclear valuation turns a routine clearance into days of demurrage and a frustrated customer. The border is where paperwork problems become cash problems.

The fix is unglamorous: classify goods correctly, prepare documentation before departure, and confirm that duties, VAT and any product certifications are handled up front. Each region has its own quirks, and the rules keep moving.

Treat compliance as part of the shipment plan, not an afterthought at the port. Goods that are cleared on paper before they arrive keep moving.
